Canberra Walking Festival

Information about the next Canberra Walking Festival, to be held on 30-31 March 2019 will be provided prior to entries opening on 1st October 2018. In the meantime, the information from this year’s event is still available as an indication of what is involved. Please note, this is indicative only, as routes and timings may change.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next Canberra Walking Festival incorporating the 27th Canberra Two Day Walk will be held on 7-8 April 2018. Additional walks are scheduled on the Thursday and Friday prior to the Festival weekend. Online entries have now closed, but cash entries are also available on the day ($25/day). Entry fees are non-refundable.
The Canberra Walking Festival is a non-competitive challenge walk for all ages. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. It’s not a race but is about fun, fitness, fellowship and personal challenge. Running is not permitted. The walks take you along Canberra’s extensive footpath and recreation path network. Routes pass national buildings and Lake Burley Griffin and go through a number of Canberra’s Nature Parks and are different both days. Walkers are asked to complete their walk before 4 pm each day. The walks will be held irrespective of the weather. Please also read the Conditions of Entry carefully for the full rules governing the event.
In 2018 the location of the Control Centre will move to the historic Albert Hall on Commonwealth Avenue, next to the Hyatt Hotel. This venue will be used again in 2019. An updated location map is provided.
Everyone who completes any route on both Saturday and Sunday will receive the Canberra Two Day Walk Medal. Separate medals are also awarded to marathon finishers.
Optional International Awards: There is an additional cost for participation in these international award programs (IML and IVV). To obtain the IML qualification, at least the nominal 20km route must he completed on both days (or 10km each day for the over 70s); no exemptions are allowed. Further information is available at the Control Centre on the event days.
Please come back to check this page regularly. Updates will be provided as the event approaches, including maps of the walk routes, gpx files to download into your smart phone and a detailed “welcome” letter with additional instructions to assist in your preparation for the Canberra Walking Festival.
Update 2: 3 April – online entries have now closed, but walkers can still register at the Albert Hall on Friday afternoon (2-6pm) or on the weekend – $25/day (cash only). Emails will be sent to all registered walkers later today with the following information (the bold items below are links to the documents):
Email 1 – Welcome 2018 – all the information you need to ensure your enjoyment of the 2018 Canberra Walking Festival weekend – emailed to all registered walkers.
Email 2 – Instructions for Thursday’s Mt Majura and Mt Ainslie Walks – information for the pre-Festival walk with Walking For Pleasure – emailed to all walkers who expressed interest in doing this walk, but everyone is welcome, noting there is a 9km and 16km option available, but the walks are on trails that are quite rough and rocky in places.
Email 3 – Instructions for Friday’s Capital Walk – information about the pre-Festival walk on the original IVV route in Canberra – emailed to all walkers who expressed interest in doing this walk, but everyone is welcome.
The weather forecast is for warm days over the weekend, so ensure you apply sunscreen and keep your fluids up while walking. Also keep an eye on our News page and our Facebook page for any last minute items and tips that may be of interest – you don’t need to be a Facebook user to look at our page (it’s works just like any another web page – but only Facebook users can leave comments)
Update 1: 12 March – route maps are now available (the bold items below are links to the documents) – printed copies of the maps will be available for registered walkers when they check in each day. All routes will also be marked with a combination of physical signs and/or chalk arrows. GPX files of each route are also available in dropbox.
Saturday central and east basin routes – for those walking the marathon, early start 21km, 10km and 5km (ie this is the first half of the marathon, with a 11:45am cut-off to continue to the second half of the marathon below).
Saturday west basin routes – for those walking the marathon and late start 21km.
Sunday point to point routes – for those walking all route options – 26km, 21km, 10km and 5km.
** For instructions on how to load GPX files onto your phone, go to the Permanent IVV Trails  page. The easiest way is access the desired routes using the Dropbox App on your phone and export to your desired navigation App directly from Dropbox. **
