Canberra Walking Festival – Information and Program of Events

The next Canberra Walking Festival incorporating the 29th Canberra Two Day Walk will be held on 4-5 April 2020. Additional walks are scheduled on the Thursday and Friday prior to the Festival weekend. Discounted online entries will be available from midday on 1st October 2019. The Canberra Walking Festival is a non-competitive challenge walk for all ages. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. It’s not a race but is about fun, fitness, fellowship and personal challenge. Running is not permitted. The walks take you along Canberra’s extensive footpath and recreation path network. Routes pass national buildings and Lake Burley Griffin and go through a number of Canberra’s Nature Parks and are different both days. Walkers are asked to complete their walk before 4 pm each day. The walks will be held irrespective of the weather. Please also read the Conditions of Entry carefully for the full rules governing the event.

The location of the Control Centre is once again at the historic Albert Hall on Commonwealth Avenue, next to the Hyatt Hotel. A location map is provided.

Everyone who completes any route on both Saturday and Sunday will receive the Canberra Two Day Walk Medal. Separate medals are also awarded to marathon finishers.

Optional International Awards: There is an additional cost for participation in these international award programs (IML and IVV). To obtain the IML qualification, at least the nominal 20km route must he completed on both days (or 10km each day for the over 70s and under 10s); no exemptions are allowed. Saturday 28 March- Tuesday 31 March
from 8am daily – exact schedule TBA For anyone looking for a pre-event adventure, a group of international and AussieWalkers will be tackling the Bondi to Manly walk – an 80km coastal walk in Sydney over 4 days (using public transport to get to and from the walks each day). If you have any interest in joining this event please email and we will put you in touch with the group. IVV credit is available.
2 April
9.30am-1pm Walk with ACT Walking For Pleasure ($5 for IVV stamp, paid on the day)
The location of the walk is yet to be decided.
3 April
11am-2pm Capital Walk 11km ($5 for IVV stamp, paid on the day)
Meet outside the Albert Hall and enjoy a guided walk that includes Parliament House and Telopea Park before returning to the Albert Hall for the official start of the Canberra Walking Festival
2-3pm Walkers are invited to visit the Albert Hall to meet up with other walkers and event organisers to ask any questions you may have about the event
The shop will be open for walk souvenir sales
The IVV counter will be open for stamping for the Capital Walk and any other IVV walks you may have completed
from 3pm Welcome Walk followed by reception to welcome our interstate and international visitors who are walking on the weekend

(Day 1)
4 April
7-7:30am Registration 42.2km marathon walkers and early 21km walkers, joint briefing at 7:20 for 7.30am start
Marathoners will depart first, followed immediately by 21km walkers who have elected to start early and complete the first half of the marathon course.
Marathoners need to complete the first half of the marathon by 11:45am to continue to the second half of the route. If not, you will be given credit for 21km.
9:30-10am Registration for late 21km walkers, plus 10km and 5km walkers, joint briefing at 9:50 for progressive starts from 10am
21km walkers who have elected to start late will be doing the second half of the marathon course.
11:30am-4pm Walkers returning and checking in
*marathoners collect their medal/pin
*IVV walkers get IVV books stamped for Saturday
4:30pm-5:30pm AGM of AussieWalk IVV Inc – all welcome to attend but only paid up members may vote
(Day 2)
5 April
7:30-8am Registration 28km walkers, briefing at 7:50, buses leave at 8am **don’t be late**
For walkers staying at the Abode Hotel in Woden, there will be a bus available to collect you from the hotel at 7:15am, however you will need to make your own arrangements to return to the hotel (public transport is readily available for the return journey, but does not start early enough to get to the walk start)
8:30-9am Registration 20km walkers, briefing at 8:50, buses leave at 9am **don’t be late**
9:30-10am Registration 11km and 5km walkers, briefing at 9:50, buses leave at 10am **don’t be late**
11:30am-4pm Walkers returning and checking in
*two day walkers collect their medal/pin
*all walkers collect a 2020 sticker and new walkers collect an event certificate (we also have some uncollected certificates from previous years)
*IVV walkers get IVV books stamped for Sunday
*IML walkers get IML books stamped (note minimum qualifying distances apply)
3-4pm Awards and Closing Ceremony
